Arch Manning In Concussion Protocol As Texas Preps For Home Game Against Vandy

AUSTIN — Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning has been placed in concussion protocol and did not practice on Monday as the Longhorns prepare to face No. 9 Vanderbilt this weekend.

Head Coach Steve Sarkisian said an update on Manning’s status would come later in the week.

Manning was injured on the first play of overtime in Texas’ win over Mississippi State last Saturday. If he can’t play, the Longhorns will have graduate transfer Matthew Caldwell leading the offense this weekend.

“I thought Matt had a great practice today,” Sarkisian said. “The players have a lot of confidence in him, his maturity, his approach. He’s very engaged even when he doesn’t play. Today felt very normal, and the players were comfortable with him.”

Manning has passed for 1,795 yards and 15 touchdowns, playing his best game of the season on Saturday — 346 yards and three touchdowns as Texas rallied from 17 points down in the fourth quarter.

Caldwell is a transfer from Troy University, where he was 3-2 as a starter last season with 13 touchdown passes.
