ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — San Antonio FC’s season came to an end on Saturday night as they fell 2-0 to New Mexico United at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park, eliminating them from the postseason.

San Antonio still has not won a playoff road game in franchise history, going 0-2-1 all-time.

“Before the second goal, when we were playing, we were in control of the game,” SAFC Head Coach Carlos Llamosa said. “When we were losing 1-0, we were chasing the game. We were creating something good. We fell asleep for a second, and they scored the second goal, and it was difficult to go and come back in the game.”

Mukwelle Akale opened the scoring for New Mexico in the 20th minute when he beat goalkeeper Richard Sanchez after his first shot was denied. Valentin Nöel added a second goal for the hosts in the 58th minute.

“We came and did what we were supposed to and what we planned in the week, but at the end of the day, it’s about details. It’s a little slip here and there, and they score two goals from that,” SAFC midfielder Lucio Berron said.

SAFC ends its season with a record of 11-12-7 and 40 points, its lowest point total in its six seasons of making the playoffs, apart from the 33 points it had in the shortened 2020 COVID season.

San Antonio made the postseason in Llamosa’s first season at the helm of the club. 2025 was a year filled with frustration and inconsistent play, but also glimpses of how good the team can be in the future.

“From preseason to now, first of all, I want to thank my staff, my players, the organization, for all the support,” Llamosa said. “Since day one, we received the support from them … I’m glad that we made playoffs, because this team deserved to make playoffs. In tough moments, those guys fought, those guys put in the work, those guys ran the extra mile to put the team in playoffs, so I appreciate that.”
